Why Your Brand Doesn't Feel Like "You" (And How to Fix It)
You know the feeling. Someone lands on your website, looks at your logo, reads your bio... and none of it quite sounds like you. It's not bad, exactly. It's just not right. It could be anyone's brand.
If that's you right now, you're not alone, and you're definitely not doing anything wrong. This happens to almost every small business owner at some point, usually because of one (or a few) of these five things. I'm Mar, founder of La Mar Studio, a brand identity and web design studio based in Brighton, UK, and I see this exact disconnect in almost every discovery call. Here's what's actually going on, and how to fix it.
1. You built it backwards
Most brands start with a logo, a colour palette, maybe a nice font pairing... and the thinking about who it's actually for comes later, if at all. It's completely understandable. Visuals are the fun part, and strategy feels like homework.
But when the look comes before the thinking, you end up with something that's pretty, but not purposeful. It doesn't pull the right people in because it was never built with them in mind.
The fix: Go back to basics before you touch another mood board. Who exactly are you for? What do you want them to feel the second they see your brand? Nail that first, then let the visuals follow.
2. You're talking to everyone, so you're really talking to no one
Trying to appeal to every possible customer is one of the fastest ways to end up sounding like nobody at all. Generic messaging feels safe, but it's forgettable.
The fix: Get specific. The clearer you are about exactly who you help and what you help them with, the more magnetic your brand becomes, even to people slightly outside that group. Specificity reads as confidence.
3. Your business grew, but your brand didn't
You started out doing one thing. Now you do three. Your prices have gone up, your clients have changed, your confidence is in a completely different place... but your website still looks like it did on day one.
The fix: Brands aren't "set it and forget it." A brand refresh isn't starting over, it's just catching your outside up with your inside.
4. You're copying what looks good instead of what's true
Pinterest boards are dangerous like that. It's easy to fall in love with a look because it's trending, or because it worked beautifully for someone else's business, and then try to force your brand into it.
The fix: Borrow inspiration, never identity. The most magnetic brands aren't the most on-trend ones, they're the most honest ones. What's true about how you work? Start there.
5. There's a gap between what you say and how you show up
Your website might say "approachable and warm," but your actual copy reads stiff and corporate. Or you say you're "premium," but your Instagram feed looks thrown together. When there's a mismatch between the story you're telling and the experience people are actually having, it creates a subtle sense of distrust, even if they couldn't explain why.
The fix: Everything, your words, your visuals, your tone, needs to be pulling in the same direction. Consistency is what makes a brand feel trustworthy.
So, where do you start?
If you read through that list and thought "okay, that's basically all five," don't panic. This is exactly why I built the Brand Strategy Template, it's the framework I use with my own clients to work through this in one sitting: who you're for, what makes you different, and how to say it so it actually sounds like you.

Build Your Brand With La Mar Studio
You can't control how someone feels the moment they land on your website, but you can absolutely influence it. That's what good brand strategy does.
At La Mar Studio, brand strategy is where every project starts, before a single colour or font gets chosen. It means getting clear on the questions that actually shape how your brand comes across, like:
Why did you start your business?
Who do you actually want to work with?
What do you want people to feel the moment they find you3
What makes the way you work different?
Where do you want your business to be a few years from now?
If you're ready to build a brand that feels unmistakably yours, get in touch with La Mar Studio. I work one-on-one with small businesses, solopreneurs, and purpose-led brands, especially in wellness, lifestyle, and creative sectors, helping them create an identity and website that reflects who they really are, connects with the right people, and makes it easy for someone to say yes.
